I set off from Glasgow on Feb 12th 2002,
to start my travels around the globe. After 12 and half hours on a flight with 2 screaming kids in front of me, I arrived
in Bangkok on the 13th. The first thing to hit me was the heat, 35c during the day,
above 20c at night.
After
fighting through the touts at the airport, managed to find the bus to Khao San Road, checked
into my hotel, The Royal - nothing grand about it, was woken at 6am every morning
by the maids outside the room, then at 7am, by people sanding doors, 4 floors beneath
me. Although it did have a pool, which was some welcome relief from the heat.
Wednesday night went to check out Khao San Road, met a few English
people. Thursday went to check out a few temples, took a ride in a tuk-tuk, the driver wanted to take me on to a gem place,
after much persuasion and 40baht I managed to get rid of him and walk back to the hotel - bad idea. I kind of had an idea
where I was going but just kept walking, got majorly lost, streets I couldnt even see on the map, had to get a taxi back,
turned out I was 10km away from the hotel.
Friday met up
with a guy from New York, we went to visit the Grand Palace, although somehow managed to get lost from him. Sat morning checked
out of the hotel, had to find a guesthouse. The room was so small, the length of the bed with like 30cm at the end and a sliding
door, and the shower, did I miss it, there was a hose. By Sunday Bangkok was really pissing me off, I booked myself on the
next flight to Chaing Mai.
Ghaing Mai
Arrived in Chaing Mai on the 17th,
alive. The flight was awful, was shaking all the way along the runway, and then nearly tipped over as it took off. Was also
shaking all the way to Chaing Mai, was expecting it to fall out the sky at any second. Checked into a really nice guesthouse
- The Rose in the old town, the room was huge compared to the place in Bangkok, 100baht a night and breakfast included. I booked myself on a 3 day trek in the Pai area, a 3hr drive
from Chaing Mai, 1800 baht for 3 days, 2 nights, all transport and accommodation, quite a good deal.
There was 12 of us, guide included. Our guide thought I was only 15, much to
everyones amusement. First day we set off, first stop was a market to buy the food, were they were selling maggots and cockroach,
to eat. There wasn't much walking on the first day, only around 2 hours, the first village we stopped at we tried some tobacco
in banana leaf. Next village we stopped at we stayed the night, one of the guys in the village was offering more than tobacco,
but we just stuck to their homemade whisky - not as good as the Scottish stuff. Next day after breakfast we set off for the
next village - too much walking.
Our guide said there would be a party there that night, great we thought. Our
not so tough guide, pointed out a baby iguana on a tree although crapped himself when he went to touch it and it moved. We
had to walk through a pitch black cave, not much fun when we only had 2 torches between the 12, we walked through some fields
where they grow opium, and one of the guys in the next village was offering it for 50baht a pipe. We arrived at the village,
after dinner, the guide says the party is over there, some people dancing around a tree, beating a drum, was no party to us
Day 3, we were woken at 4am, by the chickens outside the hut, thankfully there was no walking, just going down the river on
a bamboo raft, we were on the rafts for about 2 hours, going over rapids almost falling off. Our guide says there a 40 foot
waterfall coming up, we didnt believe him, and then we saw the water disappear, not quite 40feet, about 15 feet down a slope
of rock. After that was off for ride on an elephant, 3 of us on 1 elephant, hanging on as it charged across the fields.
I also met up with Lisa who Id
been emailing from back home. She was also on a trek in Chaing Mai; dont think she enjoyed it as much as I did. Also met up
with her on Phi Phi (more later). I left Chaing Mai on the 22nd, back to Bangkok
So
after my 3-day trek in the hills in Chaing Mai, headed back to Bangkok on Thursday night. Took the overnight bus, 11 hours. No seatbelts in this bus, not very reassuring when a Swedish
girl I met that day said her friend was in a bus crash in Thailand and spent 3 months in hospital. Met a guy from Yorkshire on the bus called Matt, he was also doing a trek, seems everyone just goes to Chaing Mai to do a trek. Also had 2
Japanese guys asking if I knew Mel Gibson, they knew Scotland from Braveheart, for some bizarre reason thought I knew him.
Above is a picture of myself, Lisa and Maria, on the Elephant Trek,
in the Pai area, north of Chaing Mai. February 20th 2002.
Heading
south and 21st with no booze!!!
Anyway I arrived
in Bangkok, early Friday. Decided
to stay here for the night before deciding what to do next. Met Matt on Friday night. I spent a bit too much money. Im suspicious
of the bars here more water than alcohol in the classes. Went to this RnB club,
really small. The DJ sits in a swan off tuk-tuk, bizarre
Decided to
head to Kanchanaburi on Saturday afternoon. Took a taxi too the bus station, getting out noticed the guy didnt have his meter
on, He wanted 300 baht, should only have been 60. No police around, after 10 mins arguing with him, he came down to 80, he
got 73, and then I headed off.
I checked
into a really nice Guest House by the River Kwai. Had my own
little bungalow.
Although the walls were too thin could here the guy next-door snoring all night, and crapped myself when I turned the shower
to hear 'RABIT' a frog sitting in.
On Sunday
I went to visit the Erawan Waterfalls, 7 in total. Went swimming in a few, was really good apart from the fish biting at my
toes. After that I took a train ride on Death Railway, and the bridge over the River Kwai. Monday I visited the Jeath War Museum, quite in interesting
place, its set up like a Prisoner of War Camp. There is a glass monument with the bodies of 106 POW's in it. Kanchanaburi
was too quite at night, not enough going on.
Its Tuesday
now, my 21st Birthday headed back to Bangkok for a few days,
heading south later in the week.
Conned again - this aint the 1st class boat |

Myself and Kevin Kayaking in Ao Nang, Thailand. March 4th 2002. |
So I headed back to Bangkok 2 weeks
ago to celebrate my 21st. Checked into The Royal Hotel again. This time had a much nicer room, and no noise. Little did I
know that my 21st was on the same day as a religious festival in Thailand
- Buddha Day. I turned up at this bar to be greeted with the words 'No Beer', no beer I said, "Religious festival, no beer
in all of Thailand". FUCK! Ordered a coke, and decided
to head off to find a place serving alcohol. After a long walk, all of 10 seconds along Khao San
Road, we managed to find a few places selling beer.
I went to a Psychic.
She read my palm. Said today was a special day. She said - you a special person,
very clever man, turns out everything will be fine, but I have to watch out for an 'actress' when I'm 23. Ill have a long
life. Then she said, you dont wear sunglasses do u, Im like no. She pointed right at my eyes, and said watch your eyes
I met up with Kevin in
Bangkok and we decided
to head south together. There are too many 'girls' in Bangkok with big feet and Adams apple. We decided to
head to Khao Pha Ngan on the 28th, just after the Full Moon Party. After spending the day looking around for the best deal
on ticket prices, we were offered 1st class train tickets, the bus, and boat all for 1089 baht, the cheapest we had seen.
We paid for the tickets, collected them. Checked them later, they were 2nd class, we were conned. We ended up paying double,
the normal 2nd class price.
We left Bangkok on the Thursday
night for Ko Pha Ngan - they shot parts of the file 'The Beach' there. It took us 18 hours. Train, Bus and Boat. We were conned
with the tickets, we asked for, and paid, for first class, when we checked them they were second-class. We paid like double
then.
Got to Ko Pha Ngan on
Friday morning, its so hot, at 8am it was like 30c. But it was shit, far too quite.
Its a lovely place, but dead. Everyone must have left after the full moon party. We were staying in a beach hut right by the
sea. Palm tress right outside. We were the only British people there, all the rest were German, lesbians who didnt shave their
pits.
We decided to leave the
next day. We headed back to the Pier decided what to do next. We decided to stay in the centre, for that night and head to
Krabi the next day. In Ko Pha Ngan, we rented mopeds for the day. Never been on one before, was going ok, till we get to this
steep hill, I see the sign 'use low gear'. Too late, it stalls half way up; some Thai guy had to ride it up for me. Then the
hill gets even steeper, we decide to go back down. Bad idea, it reeves away, I come off the thing and end up in the bushes,
few cuts and bruises, fine though.
We headed to Krabi on
the Sunday, stayed there 2 nights found it really nice. While we were there, went kayaking in Ao Nang.
Ko Phi Phi and "The Beach"
I got an email from Lisa
who I met in Chaing Mai. She suggested Kevin and myself come to Ko Phi Phi - they shot 'The Beach' around here. We arrived
there on March 4th. It has to be the best place I have been. Out drinking every night with Kevin, Lisa and Sam. Also strutted
my stuff on the dance floor with Sam a few times. Hilarious, the things you do on holiday.
While I was there, I went
snorkelling with sharks, absolutely amazing, was just the guide and I, out for over 3 hours, saw about 10 in total. Saw the
first one was a bit scary. Then 3 start circling us, Im like they are thinking breakfast. They go out of sight; the guide
turns to swim away. I turn to follow him, the fin on my left leg came up and hit my right leg, shat myself, came straight
out the water having a panic attack, thought it was a shark. Also had a tattoo (temporary one) done, been to the various beaches
around here. We also visited Maya Bay - the actual beach used in the film. Also wanted to do parasailing but the
tide was too low.
My Visa for Thailand ran out on the 14th, but I didnt want to
leave. So I had to get up early (which i hate doing) and head back to Krabi to the Immigration Office, and ask them to extend
it. After having to get photocopies, pictures, fill in the form, blah blah, ive got it extended for 10 days.

Snorkilling with Sharks. Ko Phi Phi. March 10th 2002. |
Malaysia and Singapore
After 5 weeks in Thailand, we decided it was time to head
south. Spend one more week in Ko Phi Phi, not doing much, sunbathing, drinking. We left Phi Phi on March 20th, to head to
Kuala
Lumpur.
The night before we went
out for a few drinks, Lisa went home about 12, Kevin around 1. I decided to stay out, dont know where the time went, didn't
get in till around 6am. Was woken in the morning by Kevin, to the words "I don't know if you know but its 8.05am". I felt ill, think it was a mistake
to go out drinking all night then have to get on a boat at 9am. Felt ill all the way to Hat Yai, though I was going to be sick on
the American girl in front on me, luckily for her I wasn't. The driver was also driving quite bad and falling asleep at the
wheel; luckily we got there in one piece.
When we eventually got
to Hat Yai, we missed the train to Kuala Lumpur by 40mins; next one wasnt until the next afternoon. We were really pissed off, decided
to get the overnight bus. Arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 4.30am on the Thursday, headed for China Town to the nearest hotel. The one we were in didn't have any windows,
although was a great view of the Twin Towers from the roof. Wasn't much to do in KL, just had dinner at 'Planet Hollywood', and got
one of those drawings done by a street artist, looks kind of like me. Also it rained for the first time in 7 weeks.
Got my hair cut in Kuala
Lumpur, was quite obvious the guy was gay, had these long nails, after he cut it was giving me some kind of bizarre head massage,
digging his nails into my head, was that sore I had to ask him to stop. Then he started working down my back and arms - massage,
more an excuse to touch me up.
Also in Kuala Lumpur we were out at night, people coming
up, saying 'u looking for lovely ladies, I have pretty Chinese girls'. Taxi drivers slowing down and asking us.
We left Kuala Lumpur on Sat 22nd for Singapore. Arrived in Singapore tried to get money out of the ATM,
wouldnt give me any. I made an ass of Internet banking; put money in the wrong account. Thought I would have to start busking,
not that I would have minded. Managed to get some money out, had to find the cheapest place to stay, dorm bed at $13 a night.
Singapore is too expensive, $13 for a bottle of beer. Although the shops are quite good, went a bit mad.
Not did much while I was
there, checked out Raffles Hotel, very nice. Went to Fort Canning, the War Memorials. Went to Little India, could smell it before I got there. Then some
how managed to walk right past the main street. Was looking for a parrot to read my fortune, couldn't find one though. Also
went to the open zoo. Quite good, the animals aren't behind cages, but the enclosures are built so the animals cant get out.
Walking in there were Chimpanzees swinging above our heads.
